Working with JaxView

This section introduces you to the working with the JaxView user interface and the configuration objects used in JaxView.

JaxView is designed as a Web-based application that can be accessed both from the machine where it is running and from remote computers. The JaxView interface uses interface elements elements that are compatible with most modern Web browsers. Like with other Web interfaces, you use a mouse or pointing device to select options by clicking on the named labels in the interface.

The JaxView interface has two principal views that you use to manage the application and to view the status of objects being monitored in the service-oriented environment. These are:

  1. The Main View
  2. The Console View

Each view is divided into sections to provide access to the features you use to configure the product and to view the status of objects being monitored and managed by JaxView. In the upper right side of each view is a view navigation menu. You use the links in this menu to switch between the principal views, to logout of JaxView, and to access this user documentation. The following sections give an overview of the Main view and the Console view

JaxView Main View

The JaxView Main view is the primary view for managing Web service information and JaxView functions. The Main view includes a number of tabs which organize the JaxView functions and configuration controls in a logical manner. The pages in the Main view are divided into three sections:

The following figure is an example of the JaxView main view showing the Services tab.

Along the upper edge of the Navigation Menu are the view selection buttons, the Logout button, and the link to this User Guide. You use these to switch between the Main view and the Console view and to Logout of JaxView.

Along the base of the Navigation Menu are named tabs that you use to access the different display and configuration functions in JaxView. The following table gives a description of the tabs and their use.

Tab Label

Description

Services

The Services tab includes the Web services object tree for adding new Web service definitions and assignment of all related management objects and governance policies. This tab also allows the user to view the real-time messages that are being sent to or from a specific Web service or an operation provided by a Web service endpoint.

Monitors

The Monitors tab is for adding new monitor definitions and assigning them to other objects such as Operations or Rules.

Transactions

The Transactions tab is for adding new Web service transaction monitors and viewing the real-time measured results of multiple step transactions.

Rules

The Rules tab is for adding new event notification logic rules and for associating them to monitors and alerts.

Alerts

The Alerts tab is for adding new event action alert definitions and assigning them to Rules. This tab also allows you to review the what alert actions were generated and their outcomes.

Reports

The Reports tab is for adding new scheduled reports and assigning them to Operations. This tab also allows you to view previously generated reports.

Admin

This tab is for setting a number of integration and configuration options that effect JaxView behavior. You use this tab to create JaxView user accounts, client lists, email settings, database options, monitor schedules, and other options

Within each of the Tabs there is a left side Object tree which can be expanded or collapsed to display the JaxView objects relative to that Tab. In the figure above, the Services object tree is shown. This object tree includes a number of Group nodes. Each group node contains one or more Web service nodes which each contain one or more Operation nodes. Monitor object nodes are subnodes to the operation nodes.

You use the object tree nodes to access different actions applicable to that object type. Each node has an action menu associated with it. You display the action menu for a node by selecting the node and then using right-click action with the mouse. The following figure shows an example of the right-click action menu for a Web service node in the Services object tree.

When an action is selected from the object node action menu, the right-side panel displays the form or view for that action. For example, the following figure shows the right side panel form for the Assign Monitors to Group action menu item.

JaxView Console View

The JaxView Console is intended to provide a summary of Web service performance. This view displays simple icons indicating the most recent status of monitored messages based on the threshold rules assigned to them. The Console view is divided into sections with a Navigation menu along the top and four status display areas below. These subpanels display icons showing the most recent status reading by monitor type, by Web service instance, by Operation, and by Transaction. Each icon is a hyperlink that, when clicked, generates a more detailed report for the context in a new browser window. The following figure is an example of the JaxView Console view.

The JaxView Console view can be customized as to the number of panels and the arrangment of the content panels in the view. See the JaxView Console View section for more information.
